The main theme in the Great Gatsby focuses on the corruption of the American Dream.

The basic quality of the American Dream described in the novel is the hope for something, and the consistent determination to reach your idealistic goal.

The possession of money’ and power’, no doubt, can provide material and pride satisfaction in life; but it cannot fulfill the real needs of the human heart, which is true love and genuine happiness.

In order to fulfill their American Dreams, the characters in the novel have actually given up the moral values and beliefs that were once precious to them, and the result is that they reap only emptiness in their heart and soul.

Its vanished trees, the trees that had made way for Gatsbys house, had once pandered in whispers to the last and greatest of all human dreams (page 189).

For Jay Gatsby, his dream is to attain happiness, represented by Daisy’s love, through materialism and power.Gatsby, despite his hard work, makes his money illegally by selling alcohol during an era of prohibition in America.His purpose is in attaining the love of Daisy, a girl he dated before the war, who comes from an old wealthy American family.The American dream is one of the most important themes in The Great Gatsby.The American success story is that of hard work allowing a man to become incredibly wealthy.
