Hope Springs Eternal Pope Essay Man-10
People will continue to hope even though they have evidence that things cannot possibly turn out the way they want.(From Alexander Pope's poem, "Essay on Man." Sometimes used to remark that you believe someone's situation is hopeless, as in the first example.) People will keep on hoping, no matter what the odds.In Christ we are a new creation, anticipating a newer existence in the world that is to come—an existence that has, in part, already broken through into our own space-time continuum: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Archbishop Temple put it well: "My worth is what I am worth to God, and that is a marvelous great deal, for Christ died for me." Hope is of course the belief one holds during difficult circumstances that things will get better.

It is unique to our species because it requires words and thoughts to contemplate possible future events.

By the same token, why do musicians spend endless hours playing scales, or athletes sweat it out in gymnasiums, or seminary students stay up half the night studying? They want to be someone or do something, and this hard work is the way to achieve it. Tell someone they have a terminal illness, and hope temporarily evaporates.

It is crucial to urge the promotion of hope at such times.

The Gospel responds to this malaise by assuring that in Jesus Christ lies real hope and true meaning.

Jesus came that we might have life, and have it abundantly (John ). Like once ruined castles, we are re-built to form a something beautiful, something like Christ. We much more valuable than any sheep or many sparrows, as Jesus Himself said (Matt.; ).

Hope helps to envision that a challenge or threat can ameliorate, and that there will be a “better tomorrow." Hope is by its very nature optimistic and encourages us to work towards goals of overcoming.

It has religious meaning for believers in God, who through prayer trust that their future will be protected by their Deity.

(Some animals may sense impending events but obviously cannot conceptualize the future).

There are countless dramatic stories of hope existing in people even in the most dire of circumstances.
