We warmly welcome you to the subject of Creative Writing.
You will be joining a vibrant and lively community of readers and writers, learning your craft from experienced practising authors and sharing your ideas through critique of your work and others. In the national Research Exercise (REF) 2014 we were ranked 3rd in our discipline in terms of research power (with an 85% submission), 3rd for research environment. We are also proud of our ability to make our research accessible and relevant to society and were ranked 7th for impact. The most obvious alternative is a 50/50 creative/critical division, but it should be borne in mind that the creative component has to achieve a 'fully-realised work of literature', (which means students embarking on a 50/50 Ph D are usually short story writers or poets and not novelists). In such cases, a student would normally have two supervisors ('joint supervision') – one drawn from English studies and one from Creative Writing. You will be taught to write in a range of forms and learn what kind of writer you wish to become. You will have the chance to have your writing published in the Departmental magazine, CAKE and to participate in the Festival of Writing in the summer term. The essence of the Ph D in Creative Writing is research through creative practice and this practice should be seen as the core of your 'original contribution to knowledge' as defined in the Ph D regulations. The creative and critical elements of the Ph D are not separately realised elements: ideally they form a dynamic process and should represent a dialectic that shapes the final submission to the examiners.Top level academics, practising award-winning poets and novelists teach students at all levels. Our high standing is reflected in our national ranking, being 1st in the UK for Creative Writing and 8th for English in The Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019.
